Rorke's Drift, known as "Jims land" to the Zulus, or kwaJimu in their own isiZulu language, was a mission station and former trading post of James Rorke, an Irish trader. It was located near a ford, or drift, on the Buffalo River which marked the border between British held Natal and the Zulu Kingdom. Following Rorke's death, (he shot.. Rorke's Drift in South Africa was the site of a famous battle during the Anglo-Zulu Wars in which 139 British soldiers fiercely and successfully defended the area and their garrison against between 4,000-5,000 Zulu Warriors.. Considered to be one of the most heroic and brave defences in British military history, the Battle of Rorke's Drift resulted in the award of a momentous 11 Victoria.

150 British Soldiers Against 4000 Zulus: The Defence of Rorke's Drift. 11 Victoria Crosses and Four Distinguished Conduct Medals were awarded in this most epic of battles. Eleven Victoria Crosses, the highest and most prestigious medal in the British military, were awarded to the defenders of Rorke's Drift during the Anglo-Zulu War in 1879.. On 22 January 1879, as one of the greatest disasters to befall British troops of the Victorian era was nearing its conclusion at Isandlwana, a very different story was about to unfold a few miles away at the mission station of Rorke's Drift. This small outpost was defended by a garrison of around 150 British and Imperial troops.
